Bryan Hagen, DNP, PMHNP
Clinic Director
Hello! My name is Bryan Hagen, and I am honored to serve patients at Canyon Behavioral Health in Bend, Oregon. I am a longtime resident of Bend and a rurally raised native of the Pacific Northwest. I began my career in mental health in 2006 while working in an emergency psychiatric hospital in Washington. That early experience gave me a deep appreciation for the complexity and urgency of psychiatric care and ultimately led me to pursue advanced training as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
I earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology from Western Washington University in 2006. I later completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2010, followed by a Master of Nursing in 2012 and a Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2013 at Oregon Health & Science University. In 2025, I also completed a Certificate in Executive Healthcare Leadership through Cornell University, which further strengthened my leadership skills and systems-based approach to behavioral health care.
Since 2012, I have worked with adults as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in a wide variety of settings across the behavioral health system. My experience includes outpatient private practice and nonprofit clinics, residential addiction treatment programs, crisis respite services, long-term residential mental health care, nursing facilities, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, and integrated primary care clinics serving medically complex patients. Over more than thirteen years of practice, I have had the opportunity to work with thousands of individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Each person who seeks care brings their own story, strengths, and challenges, and I believe every individual deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and compassion.
Seeking help for mental health concerns can sometimes feel like a challenge in itself, particularly if it is someone’s first time pursuing psychiatric care or if they have had difficult experiences in the past. While medication management is an important component of my work at Canyon Behavioral Health, I do not view medication as the sole answer. I place significant emphasis on building a meaningful and collaborative relationship with each patient from the beginning. My approach is patient-centered, supportive, and nonjudgmental, with the goal of creating a space where individuals feel comfortable discussing their concerns and priorities.
When medication is considered, I work with patients to review options carefully and transparently. I aim to explain why a particular treatment may be helpful, what potential risks or considerations should be understood, and what benefits can realistically be expected. My goal is for every patient to feel informed, respected, and empowered in the decisions surrounding their care.
At Canyon Behavioral Health in Bend, I welcome new adult patients seeking psychiatric evaluation and medication management for a broad range of mental health concerns. Much of my work focuses on supporting individuals experiencing major depressive disorder, including treatment-resistant depression, as well as bipolar disorder, anxiety and panic disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, and concerns related to alcohol use. I am also interested in helping individuals who would like to thoughtfully and safely reduce or simplify the psychiatric medications they are currently taking when appropriate. At this time, I am not accepting patients whose primary goal is ADHD evaluation or treatment.
In addition to my clinical work, I serve as a Board Member for the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists. I have also served as an Expert Witness for the Oregon State Board of Nursing, and from 2019 to 2025 I served as a Board Member and Vice Chair of the Oregon State Board of Psychology. During Oregon’s early response to COVID-19, I volunteered with SERV-OR at screening and testing sites in eastern Oregon. Outside of Canyon Behavioral Health, I serve as the Director of Psychiatric Services for the largest behavioral health provider in Central Oregon.
If you are considering psychiatric care or medication management, please feel free to reach out to Canyon Behavioral Health. I am happy to schedule a brief introductory phone call to help determine whether working together may be a good fit.
